3-Day Weaving & Textile Arts Immersion

The art of weaving textiles and basketry forms the foundation of this immersive learning experience in a rural village where the Karen community continues to preserve and celebrate its cultural traditions with pride and integrity. Participants will be immersed in local life through a community-run homestay experience, sharing home-cooked meals prepared by local families. The experience offers a meaningful opportunity to engage directly with skilled local artisans, while also connecting with nature, storytelling, and culturally grounded making practices.

Participants will engage in a two-day immersive workshop before collaborating with Taura to develop culturally responsive and contextually relevant curriculum connections.

The final day focuses on curriculum development, where participants work closely with Taura to translate their learning experiences into meaningful, contextually responsive curriculum design and practical classroom applications.

This professional development program is available for schools interested in sending teams or arranging customized group programs.

3-DAY Rooted in Nature

Art inspired by and connected to nature forms the foundation of this three-day immersive workshop experience, exploring papermaking, clay, and natural dye processes as expressive and sustainable making practices.

The experience begins in Chiang Mai with a hands-on day focused on papermaking and clay, inviting participants to explore these tactile mediums as tools for creativity, reflection, and curriculum connection. The second day takes place in a rural Karen village, where participants engage with natural dye practices rooted in local knowledge, working directly with natural materials and place-based traditions.

The final day is dedicated to curriculum development, where participants work closely with Taura to translate their learning experiences into meaningful, contextually responsive curriculum design and classroom applications.

"I had the opportunity to attend the Creative Chiang Mai professional development for educators and it was the best PD I’ve had in years… possibly ever! I am a visual arts educator and wanted to connect our curriculum to our host country, Thailand. The experiences were absolutely incredible, two solid days of making, learning, connecting and understanding. On the final day Taura’s expertise as an educational leader and facilitator lead us through reflection, sharing and best of all time to collaborate with our team and update our curriculum documents so we can carry this learning straight back to our context. Thank you to Taura, the Just Love crew and all the kind, patient and caring community that shared their knowledge, expertise and stories with us." - Anna

"What a great experience! I signed up for the Creative Chiang Mai workshop, and I cannot say enough good things. I was welcomed with a basket in my hotel room as well as a dinner at B Sam Cook restaurant - one of the best restaurants with the kindest chef and staff I have experienced in Thailand. As an art teacher in Thailand, I learned so much from workshops with silversmiths, paper makers, and potters. The second day included a trip to a village where I worked alongside a textile maker from the Karen hill tribe and learned to embroider. Included were also a traditional lunch, a natural-dye workshop, a village walk, a basketry workshop, and I tried my hand at traditional weaving. The workshops culminated in a session to reflect on ways I can embed my learning into my curriculum. I am working with Taura to make contacts to purchase locally sourced materials for my art room. Highly recommend this workshop to anyone who is eager to learn more about the artisans of northern Thailand. I have taught for a long time, and I can easily say this is one of the best professional development workshops I have had in my career." -Jenny
